John C. Wightman

Sometimes, waiting alone in the near-dawn darkness, John Wightman imagines in micro terms the scene inside his vintage Nikon. He anticipates the quick wink of the shutter shuttling billions of photons to etch the mysterious chemistry on his beloved Kodachrome, the light captured, literally carved in the film.
John Wightman is the man who’s there when others cannot be. In the early light of dawn, he stalks sunrises on salt marches, moon sets on secret dunes. On languid summer nights, he may wait for that right moment near the favored lighthouse. In winter, he kayaks through a glaze of ice in Menemsha Creek when the dawn rays ricochet just right. Or, on some frigid January midnight in Edgartown, the Old Whaling Church warmly aglow, Wightman finds another quarry.
No part of the Island is safe from his pursuit, and bravo that it’s so, for Wightman is a welcomed proxy for many who through his images will experience the magic light he so routinely captures, and which so often eludes most everyone else. While some artists obsess with subjects, John’s subject is frequently the very light itself.

Mimi Torchin

Island Photographer and Writer

The first moment I set foot on Martha’s Vineyard I knew I had come home. Fifteen year’s and 8,000 photographs later, I am still thrilled and astonished every day by the beauty and genuine magic of this island. Although half my year is spent on another island – Manhattan – my heart is never far from the Vineyard. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to earn my living as an entertainment writer and television commentator. Most recently, I was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Soap Opera Weekly and ran the publication for 11 years. I still write a monthly critical column on daytime drama for SOAPnet.com, the website supporting the 24-hour, Disney-owned cable soap network.

Being a freelance writer allows me to do my work from both my homes and gives me abundant time to indulge my passion for photography. I hope my photos reflect my love of Martha’s Vineyard. An artist friend has described many of them as being “moody, melancholy and serene.” Perhaps you will agree.
